SOME FUN CHRISTMAS TREE TRIVIA

There are many Christmas legends about the Christmas Tree. Saint Boniface, an English monk, has been credited with beginning this custom. He used the triangular form of the fir tree to represent the Christian belief of the Holy Trinity.

Did you know that in the 12th Century, fir trees were placed inside homes upside down? Their bases were nailed into the ceiling. By the 16th Century, they were placed upright.

Another legend holds that Martin Luther, a founder of the Protestant faith, was walking through the forest one Christmas Eve. We was enthralled by the beauty of millions of stars glowing through the branches of the evergreen trees. He cut a small tree, took it home to his family and recreated the same starlight beauty by placing candles on all its branches.

A POSSIBLE MODERN LEGEND OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE:

In a very cold country a long, long time ago, it was decided that a new tradition needed to be developed to assist in the reduction of an excess number of Norwegian firs. The idea of emulating the burning bush, as an aid in the festivities of the Christmas celebration, quickly became popular (overnight).

Thousands of excess Norwegian firs were cut down, drug into the parlors of houses throughout the land and spontaneously, everyone thought of placing candles within the boughs as a replica of Moses's epiphany. The emulation quickly became a conflagration as the drying boughs erupted into flames.

Everything possible was thrown at the burning tree hoping to extinguish the flames before the house burnt to the ground. Afterwards, amongst the chard remains were numerous interesting, melted items; giving each house its own unique set of "ornaments". The populace was heard to say as one..."Way Cool!" and a second tradition, one of exchanging gifts, quickly followed.

But...there was dismay throughout the land on not being able to use the "burning bush" tradition; until someone said..."Hey! We can continue this when someone invents the string of electric Christmas tree lights".. Everyone acknowledged the brilliance of this insight and they were pleased. Unfortunately...Benjamin Franklin was not present and it just took a little longer than expected for him to get with the program.
