Henry's obituary -

Henry Hansen, son of Peter and Carolyne Peterson Hansen, was born in Denmark on Sept 1, 1861 and passed away at the family home at 267 Howard Ave., here in Medford, on last saturday, Sept 13th, at the age of 86 years. His early life was spent in the old country, but as soon as he was able he fled Denmark because of the fear of conscription into the German army, and landed in New Jersey. After nearly three years of hard work, he saved enough to get to Iowa, where Danish friends helped him get on his feet.

In 1887 he moved on to Southern Oregon. And on April 10, 1892 he was married to Senora Webster, where by his own hands he had prepared a farm and home on Coker Butte. There he and later his family lived until 1944, when the elderly couple, their children all up and away, moved to the Howard district.

He worked hard all his life, even sending money to his parents who remained in the old world. Having worked at an early date for the Hammond nursery here, he later led in setting out several hundred acres of fruit on the east side of our valley. He helped ship out the first carload of apples ever to leave Medford. An active farmer, he was a charter member of the Roxy Ann Grange.

He was confirmed in the Danish Luthern faith at the age of 12, and later in this country attended Sunday school and church at the old church in Talent and Union Sunday Schools near his home.

Henry Hansen, born Sept 1 1861 came to America spring of '81 and lived in New Jersy and Iowa until the May of 87 came to Medford-- and worked in the first nursery in or near Medford Oregon- for the late E.W. Hammon, was situated where the boy scout headquarters now is located and he and Clem Parker and Andy Chalk packed the 1st carload of apples ever sent out of this valley. Was sent to England at that time. Has lived ever since in the valley 5 miles NE of Medford and followed orchard work and farming until a few year ago. (As written by my Grandmother Iva Senora Hansen.)
